Winston’s story sparkles with wit and sympathy, but her musings on what it means to really live even in the food of death are the true reward here. Jul 10, Rhonda Rae Baker rated it really liked it.
Would give it a 3. She eats tons of food – pints of ice cream, packages of Oreos – while sitting in bed crying and watching COPS. I cried, cheered and laughed my way through this book. It is alternately funny, disarming, and insightful.

The little details she puts here and there, the things that a widower won’t notice is missing until it happens, are touching. For weeks on end. Sophie, your husband died. Hrief this fabulous novel this weekend, as a way to treat myself. The only reason that I didn’t “really, really like it” was because the subject matter, while realistically presented, was so painful.

She teaches writing classes in fiction, feature stories and the art of the personal essay. I’m sure Joan Didion would have a stroke if she saw herself compared to Lolly Winston, but this book reminded me so much of “The Year of Magical Thinking. Sophie takes in a “Little Sister” a child in need who she sees once a week to talk to and spend time with named Crystal.
Books of the Wimston. And sure as hell I wasn’t married back then, not even had a boyfriend. I felt I was going to go in a coma for her inactivity and lack of coping device since her husband’s death.
At first, I wasn’t sure if I should even buy it because of the expected start of the protagonist dying Good Grief Author s: Yes, yes, and yes. Apr 06, Cheryl rated it it was amazing. It was griec to me right after my husband died and I couldn’t bear to open it. Aug 18, Cathy rated it it was amazing. I enjoyed it better the first time. I would have given this book only 3 stars if it hadn’t made me laugh so much and right out loud.

Her father and her stepmother take care of her for a while, making sure she showers and eats. Once she shows up for work in her bathrobe and bunny slippers which is pretty much the end of her job and the rest of what she had from the so to say stable life she had.

I used to really hate people commenting on my book, video or grocery choices after I moved to Arkansas, but it’s a fact of life here, and I’ve gotten used to it–although I still hate grrief when it comes from the evil librarians.
